Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is passed via oral to genital or genital to genital contact. Any sexually active person is at risk, and people with genital herpes are more likely to contract HIV. The use of condoms significantly reduces the chances of infection, but any skin-to-skin contact poses a risk. Know your own status and ask your partner about theirs. There is no cure, and physical symptoms are not always present as genital herpes can be dormant, so regular testing is the only way to be sure. Talk to your healthcare provider about testing.
